Here’s How to Use This Site:

Welcome and thanks for checking out my site! Ways of Wanderers is a travel and expat blog focused on cultural travel. I hope it will inspire you to travel, plus show you how to make those trips cheaper and more memorable.

What Is Cultural  Travel?

Cultural travel focuses on immersing yourself in the local culture, rather than checking attractions off a bucket list. It’s visiting a neighbourhood market or learning a language, rather than scuba diving with sharks or zip-lining through a rainforest; it’s living and working abroad rather than taking a single round-the-world trip. Cultural travel is affordable, accessible, and it’s something anyone can do.

Have a look around, and if you like the way I travel, I’ll show you how you can do it too – whether you’re planning to hit the road for a few days, a few months, or even a few years.

I’m Jess, a Canadian freelance writer. I’ve been slowly traveling around the world with my partner, Brent, since 2011. You can learn more about me by clicking here.

Here’s a brief overview of what you can expect to find in each section of this site, which should make it easier for you to find the travel info you’re looking for:

Travel To…

Click on a country to read my travel stories and tips about that destination, including the cities and attractions that I recommend checking out in each region. I typically stay in each country I visit for months at a time, so you’ll find a mixture of recommendations for major attractions, as well as off-the-beaten-path places that you may never have heard of before.

Live Abroad

Working or volunteering in a different country can be a wonderful way to slow down and learn more about a country’s culture. The volunteer abroad, teach abroad, and expat life sections will provide you with tips on how to find overseas opportunities. You’ll also read stories about my experiences living in different countries, which can guide you in determining which international work and volunteer opportunities are right for you; whether it’s teaching English in Thailand or volunteering at a B&B in Wales.

What I’ve Learned

The travel tips section is the place to go for general on advice on traveling smarter and avoiding some of the travel mistakes I’ve made myself. The travel musings section is a little more narrative, focusing on my reflections about life and travel – it’s less practical and more philosophical. Lastly, the reviews section covers overviews of different hostels, tours, and products I’ve used on the road.
