Sunday Snapshot: Koh Tao

koh tao thai island

Most people know Koh Tao as the place to go to get your scuba diving certification in Thailand. I’d heard mixed reviews of this little island in the Gulf of Thailand, with some dubbing it their favourite island in the country, and others feeling it fails to live up to the hype. Scuba diving wasn’t in the cards for our visit, but we were still able to meet some of the colourful underwater life just off the coast by doing some snorkeling. Not only did we visit during one of the island’s lower seasons, but our trip coincided with the Full Moon Party on nearby Koh Phangan, a combination that left us with Sairee Beach virtually all to ourselves.

What’s your opinion of Koh Tao? Awesome or overrated?

I'd love to do some snorkeling here, or scuba…never done scuba before but it is on my bucket list of things to do, get scuba certified! It looks lovely!

Both are totally addictive! We did a try-dive in Koh Phangan, and I really want to get my PADI!

We enjoyed Koh Tao, although the weather was a little ordinary during our stay (in terms of having a spectacular snorkelling experience). We chose Koh Tao as an escape from the more popular islands in the area.

We got our OW in Koh Tao last year, and we really loved the little island. It's big enough to have tons of different options, but small enough to be able to explore the whole thing. Of course, the beaches were great too!

Agreed! My favourite islands are the ones small enough to walk or bike around in under an hour.

Koh Tao is definitely one of my favorite islands in South East Asia, the diving culture gives it such a cool and relaxed vibe. The good thing about doing your scuba diving certification, is that you meet so many people from your course to hang out with at the many beach side bars and restaurants. Some of my best travel memories where on this island.
