This photo really sums up the appeals of Nara Park: Free roaming deer and temples. The wild deer were once considered sacred, and have since been designated as national treasures. Nara is an easy day-trip from Kyoto, with most of the attractions concentrated in Nara Park. The park is very walker-friendly, which provides a welcome change of pace from busing between Kyoto’s widespread temples and shrines. My favourite places are always the ones in which there is much to be appreciated between the major tourist sites. I enjoyed walking between the park’s temples and shrines, taking in the natural surroundings and watching tourists pose (or at least attempt to pose) with the deer.
