I really wish we had more time to see Nikko. It can be visited as a day-trip from Tokyo, but a few train mix-ups left us with only a few hours to explore its amazing natural and architectural attractions. As we walked along the forest road leading to the Toshogu Shrine, where 1000′s of towering, centuries-old cedar trees lined our path, it was obvious that it was going to be special. The Toshogu Shrine is, by far, the most ornately decorated shrine I’ve seen in Japan, yet its atmosphere still had the stripped-down, simple feeling of spirituality that I love about Shinto shrines.
What do you think of Nikko?
